Cardio-metabolic and socio-demographic risk factors associated with dependency in basic and instrumental activities of daily living among older Iranian adults: Bushehr elderly health program

Abstract Background Iran’s population is aging. Disability a major public health problem for older adults, not only in Iran but all over the world. The purpose of this study was to investigate relationship between cardio-metabolic and socio-demographic risk factors disability people 60 years Iran. Methods baseline (cross-sectional) data 2426 samples from Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) program included analysis. participants were selected through multi-stage random sampling Bushehr, southern Socio-demographic characteristics, as well history diabetes other chronic diseases, smoking measured using standardized questionnaires. Anthropometric measurements laboratory tests performed under standard conditions. Dependency determined by questionnaires basic activities daily living (BADL) instrumental (IADL) Barthel Lawton scales respectively. Multiple logistic regression used Results Mean (Standard Deviation) participants’ age 69.3 (6.4) (range: 96 years), 48.1% men. After adjusting potential confounders, being older, female (OR (95%CI): 2.3 (1.9–2.9)), having lower education level, mellitus (OR: 1.4 (1.2–1.7)) past 1.3 (1.0–1.6)), no physical activity 1.5 (1.2–1.9)) significantly associated with dependency IADL. Also, 2.4 (1.9–3.0)), 2.2 (1.6–2.9)) intake calories 0.99 (0.99–0.99)) BADL. Conclusion adults can be prevented increasing community literacy, improving activity, preventing controlling mellitus, avoiding smoking, reducing calorie intake.
